Gerald R. Sherman, 92, of Fremont, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont.

Gerald was born on June 5, 1916 in Fremont to Edgar Earl and Maud May (Messner) Sherman and graduated from Fremont High School. Gerald met and later married Carol June Larson on April 19, 1946 in Fremont, and Carol preceded him in death on Sept. 1, 2004. Gerald started working at Lubke’s Hard ware in Fremont in 1943, and together with his brother, Graydon, purchased the hardware store and renamed it Sherman Hardware in 1960. Gerald owned and operated the hardware with his brother and nephew until his retirement in 1984. Gerald had enjoyed living on the family farm in Dayton Township all his life and was a longtime member of Farm Bureau. Gerald was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church and enjoyed visiting with family and friends over a cup of coffee.

He is survived by his children, Greg (Kathy) Sherman of Troy, Susan Sherman of Chicago, and Janeen (Jeff) Kuhn of Honolulu, Hawaii; three grandchildren, Jill Kuhn, Joel Kuhn, and Eric Sherman; his brother, Gale Sherman of Fremont; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Graydon in 2002 and Glen.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Fremont United Methodist Church, with Rev. Carolin Spragg presiding, with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
