Merlyn A. Porter

(January 16, 1927 - October 4, 2008)

Merlyn A. Porter, 81, of Fremont, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans in Grand Rapids.

Merlyn was born on Jan. 16, 1927 in Grant, to Dr. Albert C. and Marcella (Bengtsson) Porter. Merlyn graduated from Fremont High School in 1944 and later joined the United States Army where he served during World War II. Merlyn had worked at the Teledyne Continental Motors Company for a brief period. Merlyn was an excellent swimmer and diver and loved sports.

Merlyn is survived by his sister, Gwen Walker of Fremont; niece, Judy (Harry) Deur of Fremont; nephew, Jim (Tonja) Walker of Union Mills, North Carolina; great-niece, Nikki; and great-nephews, Michael, Dan, and Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayland Porter.

Military graveside services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont under the auspices of the Newaygo VFW Sportsman’s Post #4249 presiding.
