Fredrick L. Holmes Sr.

(November 20, 1930 - July 14, 2008)

Fredrick L. Holmes Sr., 77, of Fremont, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2008 at Transitional Health Services in Fremont.

Fred was born on Nov. 20, 1930 in Muskegon to Clifford Scott and Helen (Coverly) Holmes. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1949 and attended Central Michigan University for one year, when he entered the United States Air Force. Fred served in the United States Air Force for 21 years, and retired as Master Sergeant in 1972. After retirement, Fred lived in Arizona until 1986 when he moved back to Fremont. Fred married Betty Carenza on February 9, 1952, and she preceded him in death in November 1984. Fred later married Margot MacDonald on June 15, 1990 in Fremont. Fred was an avid reader and spent many hours at the Fremont Area District Library enjoying the many books and enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy on television.

He is survived by his wife, Margot of Fremont; his children, Fred (Ruth) Holmes Jr. of Fremont, Brenda (Cas) Remus of Sunrise, Florida, Jeff (Jeri) Holmes of Fremont, and Carol (Jim) Willard of Ferry; step-children, Karen (Lon) Hockett of Kansas, Rex (Kay) Cole of Grant, Paul (Lynn) Cole of Fremont, Paula Cole of Fremont, and Shane (Terri) Cole of Fremont; nine grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; his brother and sisters, Scott Holmes of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Judy (John) Somers of Fremont, and Mary Lou Seymour of Walker; a sister-in-law, Grace Holmes of Bowie, Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Holmes; and a brother-in-law, Jim Seymour.

Private family memorial services were held following cremation, with interment in the Sullivan Township Cemetery in Muskegon County.
