Benefit alumni game supports Coach Johnson

Fremont High School basketball players of the past honored a long-time local coach with a benefit basketball event on Saturday, Dec. 15. The Fremont basketball program event, which included both women’s and men’s contests, raised more than $5,000 to help Coach L.A. Johnson in his battle with leukemia. The players and coaches posed with Johnson after the games. The contests pitted younger alumni players against not-so-young teams, with the more seasoned players winning both games.

Along with spectators’ ticket sales, the event also profited from the Packer Backers’ concessions sales from the evening, raffle proceeds and other donations, plus more than $1,200 in tee-shirt sales. Organizers expressed thanks to announcer and music provider Doug Harmon, the volunteer officials, and player recruiters Julie Gardenour and Ty Miller.

Johnson spoke to the crowd, thanking the people who organized and participated in the event and praising the community support he and his family have received. He also thanked local people for their prayers and spoke about how important his faith has become in recent months.
