Class of 2010 - Shae Schornagel
Fremont artist wins national silver medal
By Ken DeLaat
Shae Schornagel, a recent Fremont High School graduate who is headed to the University of Michigan, was awarded a silver medal in the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards of 2010.
Her hauntingly realistic and captivating charcoal drawing, “False,” also won a Gold Key in the regional Scholastic Art Awards held at Kendall School of Art and Design.
The young artist’s honors also included an invitation to the National Celebration in New York City put on by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, June 9 through 10 held at Carnegie Hall.
With no money in the school budget to fund such an endeavor, FHS art teacher Christine Rosenberg and the NCCA Artsplace reached out to the community. Soon, more than 35 people responded with donations to enable Schornagel to receive her award in person, with contributions covering all aspects of her trip.
“Shae is a hard worker and she produces such quality work,” said Rosenberg. “For people to come forward and support her achievement really says a lot about how the community encourages achievement in the arts.”
The artist found the New York experience to be “amazing.”
“Carnegie Hall was packed,” she said. “We got to be backstage during the ceremony and I was just overwhelmed by the amount of talented people there.”
“I’m so appreciative of the people who helped allow me to go.”
She plans to pursue Art and Design at the University of Michigan. She also has won first place in a statewide advertising design competition and is headed to Kansas City for another national competition.
“Shae’s talent is one of the highest I’ve seen at the school,” added Rosenberg.
Shae said that one of the highlights of the New York trip was seeing one of her favorite actors read some of the writing award winners.
Michael Stuhlbarg, who starred in “A Serious Man” was one of the presenters.
“I really love that movie,” Shae said.
